National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS)
When purchasing a new vehicle, it is smart to do a title check first. A title check will show if the vehicle has a “Branding” such as junk or salvage or if it has been declared a “total loss” by an insurance company.
The National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) is a national database that runs the VIN before you sign any paperwork or pay any money for the vehicle. Whether you are buying from a dealer, individual or from an auction site, obtaining a title report is easy.
How To Do a Title Check
- Get the VIN of the vehicle you want to buy. The VIN can be found on the dashboard (where the corner of the dashboard meets the windshield), the driver’s side door jamb (on a sticker), or on the vehicle title or insurance card/policy.
- Select one of the approved providers listed below.
- Have your credit card available. Prices vary and be sure you are getting the information you want from the vendor.
- Follow the steps on the vendor site to obtain the report.
